Indore EV Charging Fire Tragedy: Eight Lives Lost as LPG Cylinder Explosions Intensify Blaze
A horrific fire that erupted in the early hours of Wednesday at Indore's Brijeshwari Annex has claimed eight lives, with investigations revealing a chain of events that began at an electric vehicle (EV) charging point and escalated due to multiple LPG cylinder explosions. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised urgent questions about residential safety protocols.
Sequence of Events: From EV Charging Point to Devastating Inferno
According to Commissioner of Police Santosh Kumar Singh, the fire broke out around 4 am, originating from an EV charging station located outside a three-storey residential house. The initial explosion at the charging point quickly ignited the structure, with the flames spreading rapidly to a nearby electric pole. This triggered multiple short circuits that significantly worsened the fire's intensity.
"The EV charging point exploded first, then the fire spread to the house," Commissioner Singh stated. "Around 10 LPG cylinders were stored inside the premises, some of which also exploded. Multiple cylinder blasts occurred between 4 am and 4:30 am, making the situation extremely critical and hampering rescue operations."
Rescue Efforts Amidst Intense Flames and Conflicting Reports
Rescue teams arrived promptly at the scene but faced tremendous challenges due to the intense flames and thick smoke. They managed to access the building through an adjoining structure. While three individuals were rescued initially, several others remained trapped inside, particularly in bedroom areas.
Six victims were later recovered unconscious and tragically declared dead at the hospital due to smoke inhalation. The deceased have been identified as Vijay Sethia (65), Chhotu Sethia (22), Suman Sethia (60), Manoj Pugalia (65), Simran (30), Rashi Sethia (12), and Tinu (35). Police are working to confirm the identity of the eighth victim.
Contradicting earlier police reports that suggested electronic locks might have trapped residents, domestic help Soni Mhatre, who has worked with the family for 15 years, claimed there were no electronic locks in the house.
Forensic Challenges and Structural Damage Assessment
Dr. Arvind Ghanghoriya, Dean of MGM Medical College, reported that postmortem examinations are underway by a team of forensic experts. "All bodies are badly burned, so the process will take longer than usual. Videography is being done as part of standard protocol," he explained.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze before it could spread to neighboring houses, though the building's middle floor suffered extensive damage. Officials are investigating whether other flammable materials contributed to the fire's rapid spread.

The tragedy has prompted immediate political attention and calls for enhanced safety measures. State Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya described the incident as an "alarming wake-up call" for EV safety and directed police to form an expert committee to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for EV charging in residential areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also offered condolences and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
