Tragic Loss: Two IAF Pilots Killed in Sukhoi-30MKI Crash During Assam Training Mission

The Indian Air Force confirmed on Friday that two pilots lost their lives after a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter aircraft crashed during a training mission in Assam's Karbi Anglong district. The twin-engine jet had taken off from the Jorhat air base, a key forward base in the northeast, on Thursday evening before contact was lost mid-flight.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Defence PRO Lieutenant Colonel M Rawat stated that the last communication with the aircraft was recorded at 7:42 PM. Shortly thereafter, radar contact was lost over the forested hills of Karbi Anglong, an area renowned for its challenging terrain and limited ground access. Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion, prompting immediate search efforts.

Teams from the Indian Air Force, along with police, civil administration personnel, and villagers, launched an intensive search operation through the night. After navigating the difficult hilly terrain, rescue personnel located the aircraft debris around 1:00 AM on Friday.

IAF Statement and Condolences

In an official statement posted on X, the Indian Air Force expressed profound grief: "IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the Su-30 crash. All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief."

Officials noted that the aircraft had been reported "overdue" after losing radar contact. The exact cause of the crash remains undetermined and is under investigation.

About the Sukhoi-30MKI Aircraft

The Sukhoi-30MKI is a two-seater, long-range multirole fighter developed by Russia's Sukhoi and produced under license in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It serves as the backbone of the IAF's combat fleet, with the force operating more than 260 of these advanced aircraft.

Recent History of Sukhoi Crashes

This incident is not isolated. According to news agency PTI, a Sukhoi fighter jet crashed in Maharashtra's Nashik district in June 2024. Additionally, another Sukhoi-30MKI went down near the Gwalior Airbase in January 2023 shortly after take-off, highlighting ongoing safety concerns with these aircraft.

The crash underscores the inherent risks of military aviation training, particularly in regions with complex geography like Assam's Karbi Anglong district. The Indian Air Force continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event while supporting the families of the fallen pilots.
