Farmers Demand Immediate Desilting of Irrigation Channels Before Election Code Enforcement

The agricultural engineering department organized a crucial consultative meeting in Thanjavur on Monday, bringing together dozens of farmers to discuss the urgent need for desilting irrigation and drainage channels. The session focused specifically on addressing the silt accumulation in C and D irrigation channels as well as drainage channels that branch off from the A and B channels managed by the water resources department.

Farmers Press for Priority Action

During the meeting, farmers strongly urged officials to initiate desilting work immediately and complete it before the model code of conduct comes into force for the upcoming assembly election. The farmers emphasized that timely desilting is critical for ensuring proper water flow and irrigation efficiency during the crucial agricultural seasons.

"We need this work completed before election restrictions begin," farmers collectively pressed during the session. "Our crops depend on these channels functioning properly, and we cannot afford delays once the election process begins."

Extensive Channel Network Requires Attention

In Thanjavur district alone, the agricultural engineering department is responsible for desilting approximately 1,143 kilometers of C and D irrigation channels. Farmers specifically appealed for priority desilting of at least 300 kilometers of channels that have needed attention for many years due to significant silt accumulation.

The department has planned to begin these works well in advance this year, recognizing the importance of completing the task before election-related restrictions come into effect. This proactive approach marks a departure from previous years when such work often faced delays due to various administrative constraints.

Official Response and Meeting Details

Officials at the meeting assured farmers that desilting work would begin in the coming weeks, prior to the enforcement of the model code of conduct. The joint director of agriculture and farmers' welfare department, G Vidya, chaired the meeting that saw participation from 67 farmers, including representatives from various farmer associations across the region.

The consultative meeting was specifically convened to gather suggestions and opinions from farmers regarding:

  • The prioritization of channels needing immediate desilting
  • Practical challenges faced by farmers due to silted channels
  • Optimal timing for desilting operations
  • Coordination between different departments involved in water management

Farmers highlighted how silt accumulation in irrigation channels has been affecting water distribution efficiency, leading to unequal water access across different agricultural zones. They emphasized that proper desilting before the election code enforcement would ensure that agricultural operations continue smoothly during the critical planting and growing seasons.

The department's commitment to advance planning this year reflects an understanding of both agricultural needs and the practical realities of working within election timelines. By addressing farmer concerns proactively, officials aim to prevent irrigation disruptions that could affect crop yields and farmer livelihoods throughout the district.
