Delhi Chief Minister Inaugurates 120 Mist Spray Systems at IGI Airport to Tackle Air Pollution

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta officially inaugurated 120 advanced mist spray systems at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Saturday. The systems, installed by the GMR Group, represent a significant initiative aimed at curbing air pollution in the national capital region.

During the inauguration ceremony, CM Gupta emphasized the government's comprehensive approach to pollution control. "Our government is working on all fronts, in collaboration with all stakeholders, to control pollution in Delhi," she stated. "This initiative for dust mitigation in the airport area is commendable and strengthens our resolve for a clean and safe Delhi."

Addressing Flight Disruptions and Improving Air Quality

South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who attended the event, highlighted the practical benefits of the mist spray systems. He explained that the technology will help check flight disruptions by effectively controlling smog levels around the airport. "Flights departing from Delhi will no longer face disruptions," Bidhuri affirmed, underscoring the operational advantages of the pollution control measure.

Chief Minister Gupta elaborated that the mist systems are designed to enhance air quality for the millions of travelers passing through the airport annually. She noted that this initiative also strengthens Delhi's environmental credentials on both national and international stages.

Expansion Plans and Broader Clean-Air Strategy

The current installation is just the beginning of a larger plan. CM Gupta announced that the mist spray system will be scaled up to 600 poles to improve dust control in and around the airport perimeter, providing more comprehensive coverage.

Beyond the airport initiative, the Chief Minister outlined the government's broader clean-air roadmap, which includes several key components:

  • Full electrification of the public bus fleet by 2029
  • Expansion of the metro network across Delhi
  • Development of extensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure
  • Deployment of over 1,000 water sprinklers throughout the city
  • Introduction of AI-based dust monitoring at construction sites

Additionally, Gupta revealed that the real-time air quality monitoring network has been expanded to 46 metro stations across Delhi. The government is also enforcing compliance with pollution-control norms through the ‘Vayu Rakshak' initiative, which targets various sources of air pollution.

Toward a More Livable Delhi

Chief Minister Gupta expressed confidence that these combined measures will significantly reduce pollution levels in Delhi. "These measures will help reduce pollution and move Delhi closer to becoming one of the country's most liveable cities," she asserted, highlighting the long-term vision behind the government's environmental policies.

The inauguration of the mist spray systems at IGI Airport marks a tangible step in Delhi's ongoing battle against air pollution, combining immediate practical solutions with a comprehensive strategic approach to environmental management.
