AIADMK-BJP Seat-Sharing Negotiations Hit Roadblock Over Constituency Disputes

Four days after AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, formal seat-sharing talks between the two parties have yet to commence. This delay comes even as the rival DMK has already finalized its alliance with key ally Congress, putting pressure on the AIADMK-led front.

Internal Confusion and Leadership Silence

Second-rung AIADMK leaders have expressed confusion over the party's next steps regarding seat-sharing discussions. Many claim to be in the dark about the strategy moving forward. AIADMK functionaries revealed that EPS left for Salem on Thursday, with no seat-sharing talks scheduled for the weekend. Instead, he will be addressing rallies in Erode on Saturday and Sunday as part of the "Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom" campaign.

Senior AIADMK leaders have remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind the delay. However, party insiders indicate that the deadlock in negotiations with the BJP over a higher number of seats and specific constituencies is holding up discussions with other potential allies as well.

BJP's Revised Demands and Constituency Clashes

A senior BJP functionary disclosed that significant differences persist over key constituencies, particularly in the western belt of Tamil Nadu. The contentious seats include Tiruppur South, Singanallur, Coimbatore North, and Modakurichi, where both parties have expressed strong interest in contesting.

The BJP has reportedly scaled down its initial demand from 60 seats to approximately 40, and is now willing to settle for 25 to 30 seats. However, the party insists on constituencies with stronger winning prospects. The functionary noted that assessments from various agencies and internal reviews have been shared with Amit Shah, who is expected to initiate direct talks with the AIADMK leadership soon.

Alliance Dynamics and External Pressures

The AIADMK, as the alliance leader, appears uneasy about the number of seats and specific constituencies being sought by the BJP. Despite these tensions, both sides are keen to finalize seat-sharing arrangements and establish a clear roadmap ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled rally on March 11.

A former AIADMK minister commented, "We will get clarity once the seat-sharing with BJP is finalized. We are hoping that BJP would scale down its demands further." This sentiment reflects the broader uncertainty within the alliance.

Impact on Other Political Groups

The delay is also affecting other political entities. A functionary and potential candidate from T.T.V. Dhinakaran's AMMK stated that they are waiting for the AIADMK and BJP to finalize their deal before making their own strategic moves. This highlights how the stalemate is creating a ripple effect across Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

As the election season intensifies, the resolution of these seat-sharing negotiations will be crucial for the AIADMK-BJP alliance's cohesion and electoral prospects in the upcoming state polls.
