Tragic Death of Youth After Fall From 100-Foot Mobile Tower in Kannauj
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Kannauj district on Wednesday when an 18-year-old youth lost his life after falling from a 100-foot-high mobile tower. The tragedy occurred in Purabhoj village under the jurisdiction of the Gursahaiganj police station area.
Desperate Protest for Marriage Ends in Tragedy
The youth, identified as Sumit Rajput, climbed the towering structure around 8 AM and remained perched at a dangerous height for approximately two hours. During this harrowing period, he repeatedly shouted the name of a girl from his village, demanding that his family arrange his marriage with her. "Marry me off to her, otherwise I will jump and die," he declared to the gathering crowd below.
Villagers quickly assembled at the scene upon hearing the commotion, and Sumit's family members rushed to the location. Police authorities from Gursahaiganj police station and UP 112 emergency services arrived promptly after being alerted to the dangerous situation.
Failed Negotiations and Sudden Fall
Despite persistent efforts by both family members and police personnel to persuade him to descend safely, Sumit remained adamant. He insisted on receiving a concrete promise regarding his marriage before he would consider coming down. "First decide about my marriage, only then will I come down," he reportedly told those attempting to negotiate with him.
While negotiations were ongoing at approximately 10 AM, the situation took a tragic turn. Sumit suddenly lost his balance on the precarious structure, could not regain control, and plummeted to the ground from the significant height.
Immediate Medical Response and Death
Emergency responders immediately rushed the critically injured youth to the Community Health Center (CHC) in Gursahaiganj. Village head Krishna Kumar Rajput confirmed that despite rapid transportation and medical intervention, Sumit succumbed to his injuries during transit. Doctors at Gursahaiganj CHC officially declared him dead upon arrival.
The Superintendent of Police office later issued an official communique on social media platform X, detailing the sequence of events. According to the statement, after completing necessary panchnama proceedings, the deceased's body was sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination, with legal procedures being followed accordingly.
Background of the Deceased and Family Situation
Sumit Rajput, a resident of Purabhoj village, worked at a factory in Rajasthan and had returned home just fifteen days prior to the incident. Investigations revealed he had developed one-sided affection for a female relative, but his family had not consented to the proposed marriage arrangement.
Compounding the tragedy, the object of his affection had reportedly married another man merely three days before this incident, and she did not reciprocate Sumit's feelings according to local accounts.
The young man's personal circumstances added layers of complexity to this tragedy:
- His father passed away three years earlier
- He lived with his mother and a younger brother who has mental health challenges
- His sister had been married for five years
- Sumit served as the sole breadwinner for his household
Local residents noted that despite continuous efforts by both police and family members to convince him to descend safely, Sumit remained unyielding in his demands during the tense two-hour standoff that preceded his fatal fall.
