Surat Police Uncover Bootlegging Racket Using Watermelons as Cover

In a startling revelation, bootleggers in Surat attempted to smuggle liquor into the city by hiding it under a layer of watermelons, but a swift raid by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) exposed their unusual tactic. The operation led to the seizure of liquor worth approximately Rs 4.88 lakh from a tempo intercepted near Kangaroo Circle in the Puna area.

DCB Raid Exposes Unusual Smuggling Method

Acting on a specific tip-off, DCB teams moved quickly to intercept a suspicious tempo that was heavily loaded with watermelons. During a thorough search, police officers removed several of the fruits and made a surprising discovery: 50 boxes of liquor were cleverly concealed beneath the watermelon stock. Investigations revealed that the consignment had been transported from Maharashtra, indicating a cross-state smuggling operation.

Arrest and Modus Operandi of the Accused

The tempo driver, identified as 38-year-old Raju Balai, was immediately arrested at the scene. Police officials disclosed that Balai had been reusing the same stock of watermelons multiple times to hide the liquor, only discarding the fruits when they began to rot. This cost-effective yet risky method allowed him to operate under the radar for an extended period.

Further investigations uncovered that Balai had a history of similar offenses. He had previously been caught smuggling liquor concealed in garlic sacks, demonstrating a pattern of using agricultural produce as a cover. Typically, he operated near fruit and vegetable markets to blend in and avoid raising suspicion among authorities and the public.

Ongoing Probe and Broader Implications

Police are now intensively probing the intended recipient of the seized consignment, aiming to dismantle the entire supply chain involved in this bootlegging network. This incident highlights the innovative, albeit illegal, tactics employed by smugglers to evade law enforcement in Gujarat, where strict prohibition laws are in place.

The successful raid underscores the vigilance of the DCB in combating such crimes, and serves as a warning to other potential offenders. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities, especially around market areas, to help curb the flow of illicit liquor into the city.
