Vadodara ASI Arrested for Alleged Drug Peddler Links Days Before Retirement
In a shocking development in Vadodara, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) from the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) was arrested on Saturday for his alleged connections with a drug peddler caught with heroin worth Rs 48 lakh earlier this month. The arrest of ASI Laxmikant Desai, 57, who was on the verge of retirement, marks a significant and unprecedented case in the city's law enforcement history.
Details of the Heroin Seizure and Arrest
The State Monitoring Cell (SMC) took Desai into custody in connection with a seizure effected on January 9. On that day, SMC sleuths nabbed Amriksingh Malhi, a 37-year-old carrier from Chhani Jakatnaka, with 240 grams of heroin valued at Rs 47.98 lakh. Malhi had been under surveillance, and police were chasing him after he disembarked from a train. During the pursuit, Malhi fell into a pit near the railway tracks in Chhani, fracturing his leg, which led to his capture.
Investigation Reveals Suspicious Links
Interrogation of Malhi and analysis of electronic evidence uncovered that Desai was closely linked to the accused drug peddler. Sources indicate that frequent phone calls and suspicious financial transactions between Desai and Malhi raised red flags, prompting a deeper probe. Police suspect that Desai may have been leaking sensitive information to Malhi, potentially compromising ongoing investigations.
Background of the Accused ASI
This is not the first time Desai has come under scrutiny for dubious activities. SMC officials revealed that he was previously transferred from Vadodara to Gandhidham due to alleged involvement in questionable dealings, though he later returned to the city. Desai has served with the SOG for approximately four years and had previously participated in several contraband seizures, making his alleged involvement in this narcotics case particularly alarming. He was due to retire later this year, adding a layer of irony to the arrest.
Official Response and Implications
Vadodara police commissioner Narsimha Komar emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, "We will take the strictest action against him." This arrest is notable as it represents the first instance of a policeman from an elite unit like the SOG being implicated in a narcotics case in Vadodara, highlighting potential vulnerabilities within specialized police forces.
The case underscores ongoing challenges in combating drug trafficking and internal corruption, with authorities vowing to maintain integrity and accountability within the police ranks.
