Tragic Highway Collision Claims Lives of Two Wedding Photographers from Kerala
A devastating head-on collision on the Salem–Kochi National Highway near the Walayar old check post has resulted in the tragic deaths of two men from Kerala and left three others with serious injuries. The fatal accident occurred on Sunday evening, sending shockwaves through the local communities of Coimbatore and Palakkad districts.
Victims Identified as Young Professionals
The deceased have been officially identified as G Vinish, aged 35, and C Ajith, just 25 years old, both residents of Palakkad district in Kerala. According to police reports and local sources, both men were working as wedding photographers, a profession that requires travel and often places them on the roads during weekends and special occasions.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Crash
Preliminary investigations by the K G Chavadi police in Coimbatore district indicate that the accident was caused by a sport utility vehicle (SUV) driven by S Vijay, a 51-year-old man from Ernakulam. The SUV was reportedly traveling toward Salem when the driver lost control near the old check post area.
Police authorities have cited over-speeding as the primary factor in the loss of control. The vehicle first struck the median divider forcefully, then veered across into the opposite lane where it collided head-on with an oncoming car. The impact of the collision was described as severe, with the car being completely mangled and crushed by the force.
Fatalities and Injuries Detailed
Tragically, G Vinish succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. His colleague, C Ajith, fought for his life but ultimately passed away during treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he had been rushed for specialized care.
Two other passengers traveling in the same car managed to survive the horrific crash. M Abi Mohan, aged 20, sustained a significant head injury along with a fracture on his right arm. A Sunil, 52 years old, suffered from abrasions and noticeable swelling on his head. Both survivors hail from Palakkad district and were reported to be in stable condition while receiving treatment at Palakkad Government Hospital.
The SUV driver, S Vijay, also sustained head injuries in the collision and was promptly admitted to a private hospital located in Sundarapuram for medical attention. His current condition remains under observation by medical professionals.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The K G Chavadi police have registered a formal case regarding the accident and have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Authorities are examining multiple factors including vehicle speed, road conditions at the time of the accident, and potential mechanical failures that might have contributed to the driver losing control of the SUV.
Broader Implications for Road Safety
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on national highways, particularly in areas where high-speed travel is common. The Salem–Kochi National Highway serves as a crucial transportation corridor connecting major cities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, witnessing substantial traffic volumes daily.
Local communities and transportation authorities are now calling for enhanced safety measures, including better signage, improved median barriers, and stricter enforcement of speed limits in accident-prone zones. The loss of two young professionals has particularly resonated within the wedding photography community, where travel between locations is an essential part of the profession.
As investigations continue, families of the deceased are mourning their untimely loss while the injured continue their recovery journey. The accident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of responsible driving practices and adherence to traffic regulations on India's busy highway networks.
