A tragic road accident in the early hours of Monday claimed two lives and left one injured in west Bengaluru. The collision occurred when a moving car rammed into a pickup vehicle that was parked on the road without any parking indicators.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident took place near Chikkagollarahatti, in front of the Sri Mahadeva Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, between 1:30 am and 1:50 am. The victims were travelling in a Maruti Swift Dzire towards a friend's residence near Electronics City.
The car was being driven by 27-year-old Gagan, a cab driver. His front-seat passenger was 26-year-old Darshan, who drove a chicken supply vehicle. Another friend, Siddesh, in his 20s and working at a bar, was also in the car.
Unlit, Parked SUV Proved Fatal
As the car approached the hospital, the driver, Gagan, allegedly failed to notice a Mahindra Bolero parked on the road. The SUV was stationary without its parking lights on. The Dzire crashed into the rear of the Bolero with significant force.
The impact was devastating. Gagan and Darshan, seated in the front, died on the spot. Siddesh, who was in the rear, sustained injuries and survived the crash.
Aftermath and Police Investigation
Following the accident, the driver of the parked SUV, identified as Shivashankar, fled the scene and is currently absconding. The police have seized both vehicles involved in the crash as part of their investigation.
In a standard procedure to check for driver impairment, authorities collected blood samples from Gagan to ascertain whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and assign liability.
This incident highlights the critical dangers of illegal or improperly indicated parking on roads, especially during night hours. The absence of warning lights on a stationary vehicle creates a severe hazard for other motorists.
