Telangana CID Recovers 1.24 Lakh Stolen Mobiles, Tops National Chart
Telangana CID Recovers 1.24 Lakh Stolen Mobiles

The Telangana Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recovered over 1.24 lakh stolen mobile phones, securing the top position in the national chart for such recoveries. This achievement highlights the state's effective use of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, a centralised system designed to combat mobile theft.

CEIR Portal: A Nationwide Initiative

The CEIR portal was initially piloted in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, and the North-Eastern states on September 5, 2022. The system allows law enforcement agencies to track and block stolen or lost mobile phones using their unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. This helps in preventing the use of stolen devices and aids in their recovery.

Telangana's Adoption of CEIR

Telangana joined the CEIR initiative 226 days after its launch, on April 19, 2023. Since then, the state has actively utilised the portal to trace and recover stolen phones. The CID's efforts have resulted in the recovery of more than 1.24 lakh devices, surpassing other states in the country.

Impact on Mobile Theft Cases

The successful recovery of stolen phones has had a significant impact on reducing mobile theft cases in Telangana. The CEIR portal enables victims to report their stolen devices, which are then blacklisted, making them unusable on any network. This discourages theft and facilitates the return of recovered phones to their rightful owners.

National Recognition

Telangana's achievement has been recognised nationally, with the state topping the chart for stolen mobile phone recoveries. The CID's proactive approach and coordination with telecom operators have been key factors in this success. Other states are now looking to replicate Telangana's model to enhance their own recovery efforts.

Future Plans

The Telangana CID plans to further strengthen its use of the CEIR portal by integrating more advanced tracking technologies and increasing public awareness about reporting stolen phones. The department aims to continue its leadership in curbing mobile theft and ensuring the security of citizens' devices.
