US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is traveling to Doha, Qatar, for high-stakes diplomatic discussions with Iran, according to CNN, citing two US officials. The trip comes as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran would honor its commitments if the United States reciprocates, while warning of a firm response to any threats.
Witkoff and Kushner Lead US Delegation
Witkoff, along with President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, is expected to lead the American delegation in Doha. The White House confirmed the meeting, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that the encounter was organized at Iran's request. President Trump announced the talks on Truth Social, writing, "Iran has requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha!"
Speaking at the White House, Trump expressed confidence in the US position, noting that global oil prices had stabilized after a brief maritime conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. He defined the objective as "the denuclearisation of Iran," adding, "We don't want them to have a nuclear weapon, and they're not going to have a nuclear weapon."
Iran's Conditional Stance
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X that "mutual understanding is a two-way street. If the American party adheres to the agreement, we will also fulfil our commitments." He added, "Our approach towards unreasonable grumbles and baseless threats relies on rationality and human dignity in decision-making, and decisive and unhesitant defence when it comes to action."
Despite the US announcement, Iran's Foreign Ministry denied that any formal negotiations with American representatives are scheduled. Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei clarified that an Iranian delegation is traveling to Qatar for unrelated bilateral agreements under an existing Memorandum of Understanding, specifically Article 11. "The fact that US representatives are travelling to Qatar has no connection with the trip of the Iranian delegation," Baghaei asserted.
Qatar's Mediating Role
Qatar continues to serve as the primary mediator between the two adversaries, facilitating behind-the-scenes communication channels. The diplomatic push follows recent military escalation involving an exchange of fire over maritime incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, which raised regional tensions. Trump noted that the upcoming meeting "will be perhaps important, perhaps not; we're going to find out."
The contrasting narratives between Washington and Tehran highlight the delicate nature of the talks. While the US signals a potential breakthrough, Iran appears cautious about appearing to negotiate under direct pressure. Baghaei emphasized that formal negotiations for a comprehensive treaty have not begun, stating, "We have not yet entered the negotiation phase for the final agreement. According to Article 13 of the MoU, the start of negotiations for the final agreement is contingent upon the initiation of the implementation of Articles 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11."
