Major Security Breach at Almora District Jail as Smartwatch Found in Inmate's Cell

Authorities at Almora District Jail have launched a comprehensive investigation following the discovery of prohibited electronic devices, including a smartwatch, during a routine security check of an inmate's cell. The incident has raised serious concerns about security protocols and possible internal collusion within the correctional facility.

Detailed Discovery During Routine Inspection

According to jail officials, the search operation took place at precisely 2:40 PM on Monday under the direct supervision of in-charge circle jailer Naim Abbas. During the meticulous inspection of a cell occupied by Praveen Valmiki, a resident of Roorkee in Haridwar district, authorities made a startling discovery.

Concealed within the toilet seat of the cell, investigators found multiple prohibited items including a charger, two data cables, a smartwatch charging cable, and two thin wires. Following this initial discovery, district jail superintendent Jayant Pangti ordered a more thorough examination, which led to the toilet seat being broken open to reveal a hidden smartwatch.

Investigation Uncovers Multiple Contacts and Previous Offenses

A preliminary examination of the seized smartwatch revealed twelve mobile numbers saved under different names in its contact list, raising immediate red flags about potential external communications. Officials confirmed that inmate Praveen Valmiki is a convicted offender in multiple cases, including charges under the Gangster Act.

At the time of the search operation, Valmiki had been taken to court for a scheduled hearing, leaving his cell unoccupied during the inspection. All recovered items were immediately sealed and sent to Kotwali Almora police station as crucial evidence in what is developing into a significant security breach case.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Based on superintendent Jayant Pangti's formal complaint, authorities have registered a case under section 39 of the Uttarakhand Prisons and Correctional Services Act, 2024. SSP Almora Devendra Pincha confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched under section 42 of the Prisons Act, 1894.

The investigation is currently focused on two primary objectives:

  1. Determining exactly how the prohibited electronic devices entered the high-security jail facility
  2. Investigating whether there was any internal collusion or security lapses that facilitated this breach

History of Security Issues at Almora Jail

This incident represents the latest in a series of security controversies that have plagued Almora District Jail in recent years. In September 2024, reports emerged suggesting that an underworld don had allegedly conducted initiation rituals within the facility, raising questions about inmate activities and supervision.

More significantly, in 2021, the Special Task Force (STF) exposed a major security breach involving a sophisticated drug trafficking racket operating from within the jail itself. That investigation resulted in the recovery of:

  • Multiple mobile phones
  • SIM cards
  • Over one lakh rupees in cash

The current smartwatch discovery has reignited concerns about the effectiveness of security measures at the facility and whether systemic issues continue to enable prohibited items to enter the prison environment. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation that will address both immediate security concerns and broader systemic vulnerabilities within the correctional system.
