Punjab Human Rights Commission Launches Probe into BSF Jawan's Custodial Death

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the recent death of a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan while in the alleged custody of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Amritsar district. In a significant move, the commission has issued directives for multiple reports to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

Comprehensive Reports Demanded by the Commission

The commission has formally requested an inquest or judicial magisterial inquiry report from the chief judicial magistrate. Additionally, it has sought a detailed report from the Amritsar police commissioner to clarify the events leading to the jawan's death. To determine the precise cause of death, the commission has asked for reports from a board of doctors. Furthermore, the NCB has been instructed to provide comprehensive details regarding the medical treatment administered to the deceased during custody, including all relevant hospital records.

Strict Deadlines and Personal Appearances Ordered

All requested reports must be submitted at least one week prior to the next scheduled hearing date. The commission has also mandated that the investigating officer of the case appear in person before the panel to provide firsthand testimony and answer questions related to the investigation.
