BHU Campus Shooting: Three Bihar Youths Arrested for February Attack on Student
In a significant breakthrough, Lanka police in Varanasi on Tuesday arrested three youths from Bihar who allegedly opened fire at a student on the hostel road of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus on February 21. The violent incident had triggered massive protests and unrest among the student community, requiring extensive police intervention to pacify the situation.
Arrests Made in Patna After Intensive Investigation
Lanka police station in-charge Rajkumar Sharma confirmed that the arrested individuals are Piyush Tiwari from Rohtas, along with Rishabh Rai and Tapas Rai from Kaimur district in Bihar. The trio was apprehended from Patna and brought to Varanasi on Tuesday evening following a coordinated police operation.
Police have recovered the pistol used in the shooting incident from the arrested youths, on whom a cash reward of Rs 25,000 had been announced. Authorities are continuing their search for two additional accomplices who remain at large.
Details of the February 21 Shooting Incident
On the night of February 21, the accused allegedly opened indiscriminate fire with the clear intent to kill complainant Roshan Mishra and his companions near Birla A hostel on the BHU campus. The brazen attack in an educational institution sparked immediate outrage and led to substantial protests demanding enhanced campus security measures.
Through meticulous investigation involving surveillance inputs and Call Detail Records (CDR), police successfully traced the location of the accused to the Sultanganj police station area in Patna, Bihar. All three suspects were found staying in a rented room at a friend's residence, where police conducted a targeted raid leading to their arrest.
Motive Revealed During Interrogation
During police interrogation, main accused Piyush Tiwari revealed crucial details about the motive behind the violent attack. Tiwari, who was an MA first-year student at BHU, disclosed that he had an ongoing dispute with Roshan Mishra and his companions.
The conflict escalated when Mishra and his associates allegedly beat up Tiwari. In retaliation, Tiwari along with his friends Rishabh Rai and Tapas Rai fired four rounds at Mishra and his companions. Following the shooting incident, all accused fled the scene and were hiding at various undisclosed locations across Bihar until their eventual capture.
