Punjab Police Bust Major Heroin Smuggling Module in Amritsar
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has successfully dismantled a heroin smuggling module, leading to the arrest of two key operatives and the seizure of 7 kilograms of heroin. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the operation on Wednesday, highlighting the police's ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the region.
Details of the Arrests and Seizure
The accused have been identified as Inderjeet Singh, a resident of Kalsian Khurd in Tarn Taran district, and Ravinder Sharma, who hails from Gurbaksh Nagar, Nawan Kot, in Amritsar. During the operation, police teams impounded a Maruti Suzuki Brezza car and a Hero Passion motorcycle, which were allegedly used by the suspects to transport the illicit consignment. DGP Yadav emphasized that these vehicles played a crucial role in the smuggling activities.
Operation Based on Tip-off
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding a major heroin delivery near Adda Bohru on the Amritsar–Jhabal road, the police swiftly set up strategic checkpoints to intercept the suspects. The operation led to the recovery of 4 kilograms of heroin concealed beneath the driver's seat of Inderjeet Singh's car, while an additional 3 kilograms was found in the possession of Ravinder Sharma. This coordinated effort underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in tackling narcotics networks.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigations
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar. The police are now conducting further investigations to uncover any potential links to larger smuggling syndicates and to identify other individuals involved in this illegal trade. This bust is part of a broader initiative by Punjab Police to curb drug abuse and trafficking across the state.
