Pune Police Crack Down on Rs 35.55 Lakh Job Fraud Targeting Special Children
In a distressing case of exploitation, the Sahakarnagar police in Pune have officially booked four individuals for allegedly orchestrating a sophisticated job fraud scheme. The accused are charged with cheating 16 vulnerable parents out of a staggering Rs 35.55 lakh by falsely promising permanent employment opportunities for their special children within the Indian Railways.
Details of the Deceptive Recruitment Scam
According to police reports, the fraudulent activities spanned from July 2025 to February of this year. The perpetrators collected amounts ranging between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh from each victim, preying on their hopes of securing stable government jobs for their wards with special needs. Senior Inspector Vitthal Pawar of the Sahakarnagar police station emphasized that all victims were parents of special children, desperately seeking permanent positions for their offspring, which led them to fall prey to this elaborate con.
The investigation revealed that the recruitment documents provided to the families were entirely fabricated, with no genuine job placements ever materializing. This has left the affected families not only financially devastated but also emotionally shattered, as their aspirations for their children's futures were cruelly dashed.
How the Fraud Unfolded: A Network of Deceit
The case came to light when a 58-year-old real estate agent from Dhankawadi, who is among the victims, filed a formal police complaint on Tuesday evening. He, along with the other 15 victims, shares personal connections, having been drawn into the scam through mutual acquaintances and community ties.
Inspector Pawar detailed the modus operandi: during a casual conversation, the complainant expressed concerns about his special child's future to a suspect he knew. Seizing this opportunity, the suspect claimed in July last year that the Indian Railways was initiating large-scale recruitment drives after a hiatus since the Covid-19 lockdown. He falsely asserted that several of his relatives held positions within the railways, lending credibility to his claims.
The suspect then escorted the complainant to an office near Pune railway station, where he introduced three other accomplices. Together, they convinced the complainant to fill out application forms for his son and encouraged him to recruit other eligible special candidates from his network. This led to 15 additional families from areas like Katraj and Dhankawadi being ensnared in the fraud.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following the complaint, the Sahakarnagar police have registered a case against the four suspects under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating and criminal breach of trust. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the accused and recover the defrauded funds. Inspector Pawar urged the public to remain vigilant against such job scams, especially those targeting vulnerable groups, and to verify recruitment offers through official channels.
This incident underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and stricter regulations to protect families from predatory fraud schemes, particularly those exploiting the hopes of parents with special children.
