Pune Food Cart Price Dispute Escalates into Brutal Assault, Man's Forearm Severed

In a shocking incident that highlights the extreme consequences of business rivalry, a dispute over food prices turned gruesomely violent in Pune's Maharshinagar area on Saturday afternoon. Three licensed food cart operators allegedly assaulted two eatery owners with sharp weapons, resulting in one victim having his right forearm severed completely at the elbow.

Violent Attack Following Price Conflict

According to police reports, the victims—identified as Kishor Bansode (29) and Prasad Ajure (29)—were attacked around 2 PM following a heated conflict regarding the pricing of tea and snacks. Senior Inspector Yashwant Nikam of Swargate police station confirmed that a case of attempt to murder has been registered against the three suspects, who operate separate food carts in the same vicinity.

The victims run a small eatery located directly behind the suspects' food carts, creating a tense competitive environment that ultimately exploded into violence. Inspector Nikam described the horrifying moment: "Ajure tried to shield himself when the accused attempted to strike his head. In the process, his right forearm was severed from the elbow."

Race Against Time to Save Severed Limb

In a dramatic race against time following the attack, Swargate police personnel arrived at the scene and took immediate action to preserve the severed limb. Officers placed the severed forearm in a clean polythene bag and rushed Ajure to a private hospital in Shivajinagar, where doctors are currently performing emergency surgery in an attempt to reattach the hand.

Meanwhile, Bansode is receiving critical treatment for life-threatening head injuries sustained during the assault at Sassoon General Hospital. His condition remains serious as medical teams work to stabilize him.

Root Cause: Intense Business Competition

Police investigations have revealed that the violence stemmed from intense competition over customer footfall in the area. The suspects, who sell popular street food items including vada pav and tea, had recently increased their prices. In response, Bansode and Ajure strategically reduced their rates further to attract more customers, triggering the deadly conflict.

This was not the first confrontation between the groups. Police discovered that the parties had engaged in a minor scuffle in the Premnagar area just two days earlier, though that incident was never reported to authorities, allowing tensions to simmer until they boiled over into Saturday's brutal attack.

Disturbing Pattern of Limb-Severing Violence in Pune

This incident marks the second such violent confrontation in Pune in recent years where a limb was severed during an attack. On January 1, 2024, an MBA student in Pashan had his hand severed at the wrist during an assault by four individuals. In that previous case, medical professionals successfully reattached the limb, offering some hope for Ajure's current medical situation.

The Maharshinagar attack has sent shockwaves through the local business community and raised serious questions about the extreme measures some entrepreneurs are willing to take in competitive markets. As police continue their investigation and search for the three suspects, the incident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly business disputes can escalate into life-altering violence.
