Major Contraband Haul on National Highway
In a significant operation, the Katigorah police force in Assam's Cachar district successfully intercepted a large consignment of smuggled goods during a routine inspection this past Saturday. The incident occurred at the Gumra checkpoint situated on the busy National Highway-6.
Acting on standard protocol, officers stopped a truck that was en route from Tripura to Meghalaya. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a substantial illegal cache hidden within.
Details of the Seizure and Arrest
The police confirmed the recovery of 120 cartons of foreign-made cigarettes, with an estimated market value of around Rs 3.5 lakh. Alongside the cigarettes, the authorities also discovered a stockpile of illegal Burmese areca nuts.
The driver of the truck, identified as Ajaymani Jamatia, a resident of Tripura, was immediately taken into custody. He is currently being held for detailed questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into the smuggling network.
Ongoing Efforts and Official Statement
Police officials have described this interception as a "significant haul" in their continuous battle against the smuggling of contraband items. They emphasized that such illegal activities along inter-state routes are a major focus for law enforcement.
In an official statement, the police affirmed that routine checks and inspections will continue unabated. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to disrupt and dismantle the supply chains of smuggled goods, ensuring greater security and compliance on the nation's highways.
