Karur Police Clarify Journalist Safety, Detail Quarry Confrontation Incident
The Karur district police issued a statement on Saturday to address and dismiss widespread claims circulating on social media and mainstream news outlets regarding the alleged abduction of journalists during a visit to a stone quarry near Kulithalai. Authorities emphasized that thorough inquiries have confirmed the safety of all individuals involved, directly countering the sensational reports that had sparked public concern.
Police Investigation Reveals True Nature of the Incident
According to police officials, the incident unfolded when a reporter and cameraman from a prominent Tamil news channel, accompanied by a few others, traveled to Sivayam North village. Their objective was to document the premises of Navamani Mines Private Limited, a local stone quarry operation. However, the situation escalated when they allegedly used drones to capture footage without obtaining prior permission from the quarry management.
This unauthorized filming reportedly triggered a heated confrontation between the quarry staff and the visiting journalists. The altercation turned physical, resulting in injuries sustained by members of both groups. In response to the violence, all injured parties were promptly admitted to the Kulithalai government hospital for initial medical treatment. Due to the severity of some injuries, they were later referred to the Trichy Government Hospital for further care and specialized attention.
Cross-Complaints Filed as Legal Proceedings Begin
In the aftermath of the confrontation, legal actions were initiated from both sides. Vimalathithan, the owner of the quarry, lodged a formal complaint with the police, alleging that the journalists had made extortion threats during the encounter. Conversely, the reporter from the Tamil news channel filed a counter-complaint, accusing the quarry staff of assault and deliberate damage to their filming equipment.
The Karur police have taken swift action by issuing Community Service Registers (CSRs) on both complaints, marking the official start of an investigative process. An inquiry is currently underway to gather all relevant facts, examine evidence, and determine the appropriate legal steps to resolve the matter.
