PAC chairman KC Venugopal has formally sought a detailed report from the Home Secretary regarding the impact of the Great Nicobar Project. The request was made during a PAC meeting, where Venugopal raised concerns about the project's environmental and social consequences.
Objection from BJP MP
According to sources, senior BJP MP Anurag Thakur objected to the discussion, arguing that the issue was not on the meeting's agenda. Despite the objection, Venugopal proceeded to seek the report.
Background of the Project
The Great Nicobar Project involves significant infrastructure development on the island, including a transshipment port, an international airport, and a power plant. Critics have warned of potential harm to indigenous tribes and fragile ecosystems.
Venugopal's move comes amid growing scrutiny of the project's clearance process and its adherence to environmental norms. The PAC chief has asked the Home Secretary to submit the report within a specified timeframe.
