Incident During Rain Inspection
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) worker fell into an open manhole in front of Mumbai Mayor during a rain inspection on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the Kurla area while the mayor was reviewing waterlogging issues following heavy rains.
Details of the Accident
The worker, identified as 35-year-old Rajesh Patil, was part of a team clearing debris near a manhole when the cover gave way. He plunged approximately 10 feet into the drainage system. The mayor and other officials were present at the time, witnessing the incident firsthand.
According to eyewitnesses, Patil was immediately rescued by colleagues and fire brigade personnel. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries to his leg and back. Hospital sources said his condition is stable and he is out of danger.
Reaction from Officials
Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar expressed shock and ordered a probe into the incident. "This is a serious safety lapse. We will investigate why the manhole cover was not secured properly," he told reporters. The BMC has suspended two junior engineers pending inquiry.
BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said, "We regret the incident and will ensure strict action against those responsible. Safety of our workers is paramount." He added that the civic body will conduct a survey of all manholes in the city to prevent such accidents.
Context of Mumbai's Drainage Issues
Mumbai has been grappling with waterlogging during monsoon seasons, with many manholes left open or poorly covered. This incident highlights the risks faced by sanitation workers. In 2025, at least 12 such accidents were reported across the city, according to BMC records.
Local activist Ramesh Gupta said, "This is not an isolated case. The BMC must prioritize worker safety and infrastructure maintenance." The opposition has demanded a comprehensive safety audit of all drainage systems in Mumbai.
