In a swift police operation, a 33-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for the brutal murder of his elderly aunt in Khatima, Udham Singh Nagar. The case, which shocked the local community, was solved within an impressive 72 hours of the crime being reported, according to Udham Singh Nagar SSP Ajay Ganpati.

Discovery of the Crime Scene

The tragic incident came to light late on February 18 when police received urgent information about 65-year-old Janaki Chand lying in a pool of blood inside her residence. The house is located in the Devbhoomi Dharmshala Colony on Sitarganj Road. Police teams immediately rushed to the spot to secure the area and begin their investigation.

Forensic experts from the field unit and the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) Kumaon unit were deployed to collect crucial evidence, including fingerprints and other forensic materials that would later prove instrumental in solving the case. An FIR was officially registered based on the complaint filed by the victim's son, Prem Chand, who serves as an Army personnel currently posted in Punjab.

Intensive Investigation Leads to Breakthrough

Multiple specialized police teams were formed to investigate the murder, employing a thorough and methodical approach. Investigators meticulously examined footage from approximately 60 to 70 CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity, piecing together movements and timelines. Additionally, police conducted extensive questioning of residents in the area to gather witness accounts and background information.

As the investigation progressed, suspicion gradually fell on the victim's nephew, identified as Ravi Chand, a resident of Adarsh Colony in Khatima. The evidence trail pointed increasingly toward his involvement in the heinous crime.

Arrest and Confession

Ravi Chand was subsequently arrested from the Jhankat area. During detailed interrogation, he confessed to killing his aunt on the evening of February 17. According to his statement, Ravi had arrived from Nangal in Haryana, where he worked as a labourer, before committing the murder.

The accused allegedly strangled his 65-year-old aunt with a muffler during the attack. Police stated that the motive appeared to be theft, as Ravi reportedly stole cash from the victim before fleeing the scene. He carefully locked the house from outside in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Authorities confirmed that recovery of the stolen property is currently underway as part of the ongoing investigation. The swift resolution of this case within just three days demonstrates the effectiveness of modern investigative techniques combining forensic science, digital surveillance analysis, and traditional police work.
