In a decisive move to safeguard citizens during the New Year revelry, Nagpur's traffic police launched an extensive enforcement operation that spanned the city on Wednesday evening. The ten-hour-long drive, executed with precision, aimed to clamp down on dangerous driving practices and ensure a safe transition into the new year.
Scale of the Safety Operation
The sheer magnitude of the police action was evident in the numbers. Over the course of the night, personnel checked more than 6,000 vehicles and administered breath analyser tests to 4,000 individuals. The focus was squarely on preventing high-risk behaviors that typically spike during festive celebrations. Multiple checkpoints were strategically established across Nagpur to intercept offenders before they could cause harm.
Key Violations and Enforcement Actions
The data from the operation paints a clear picture of the challenges on the roads. The most significant figure was the 147 cases of drunk driving registered, as breath analysers were kept busy with party-goers heading to events. This was a major area of vigilance for the teams.
Other rampant violations were also met with strict penalties. The police took action against:
- 80 instances of wrong-side driving or riding, a major hazard that can lead to catastrophic head-on collisions.
- 50 cases of triple-seat riding on two-wheelers, a common but perilous practice during celebrations.
- Approximately 100 heavy vehicles were fined for violating various norms, adding to the overall safety effort.
Leadership and Outcome
The drive was spearheaded by Traffic Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani, under the direction of Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal. Reflecting on the operation's success, DCP Matani emphasized its life-saving impact. "Thanks to proactive policing and quick interventions, we not only maintained smooth traffic flow but also saved lives by averting possible mishaps," he stated.
The relentless duty performed by the police personnel for over ten hours on New Year's Eve ultimately served as a strong deterrent. By targeting specific, dangerous behaviors, the force successfully managed the festive rush while sending a clear message about the consequences of traffic violations.
