In a significant breakthrough, the Mumbai Police have foiled an alleged conspiracy to target a Muharram procession, arresting one individual and seizing nearly 15,000 capsules suspected to contain poison. The operation, conducted late on June 26, 2026, averted what officials described as a potential mass casualty incident during the religious observance.
Details of the Foiled Plot
The accused, identified as 34-year-old Ramesh Jadhav, was taken into custody from a rented apartment in the Dongri area of South Mumbai. Police sources revealed that a tip-off led to a raid, during which they discovered 14,876 capsules filled with a white powdery substance. Preliminary tests indicate the substance is a potent poison, likely cyanide or a similar compound, though final forensic analysis is pending.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sanjay Patil, the plot specifically targeted the Muharram procession scheduled for July 8, 2026, which draws thousands of participants each year. “We have credible evidence that the capsules were to be distributed among unsuspecting devotees, causing widespread harm. The timely action by our team has saved many lives,” Patil stated.
Investigation and Arrest
Jadhav, a local resident with no prior criminal record, is being interrogated for his motives and possible links to larger networks. Police are also investigating whether he acted alone or was part of a group. The capsules were found packed in dozens of plastic bags, hidden inside a false ceiling. A laptop and mobile phone seized from the scene are being examined for digital evidence.
Commissioner of Police Hemant Nagrale praised the intelligence unit for their swift work. “This is a major success for the Mumbai Police. We remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt communal harmony,” he said. The police have increased security around all Muharram processions across the city.
Community Response and Security Measures
Local community leaders have expressed relief and gratitude. Maulana Syed Zainul Abideen, a prominent cleric, said, “We commend the police for their alertness. This could have been a tragedy. We urge everyone to cooperate with authorities during these sensitive times.”
Additional security forces, including Quick Response Teams and dog squads, have been deployed at key locations. The police have also appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing, with the accused remanded to police custody until July 2, 2026.
