The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Saturday announced its decision to walk out of the DMK-led alliance after nine years, citing the DMK's willingness to support an AIADMK-led government. The party's founder, Vaiko, made the announcement following a key party meeting.
Vaiko's Key Statements
Vaiko stated that the DMK's recent moves, including its readiness to back a government formed by the AIADMK, were unacceptable to the MDMK. He also revealed that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had asked him to direct the party's two MLAs to resign and contest by-elections. This demand, Vaiko argued, was aimed at weakening the MDMK's representation in the assembly.
Impact on Tamil Nadu Politics
The MDMK's exit marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape. The party had been a key ally of the DMK since 2017, providing crucial support in the 2021 assembly elections. With the MDMK now out of the alliance, the DMK may face challenges in maintaining its majority, though it still holds a comfortable lead with support from other allies.
Political analysts suggest that the MDMK's decision could pave the way for a realignment of forces ahead of the 2026 elections. Vaiko emphasized that the party would now work independently to uphold its principles of social justice and federalism.
