Mumbai Man Faces Abetment to Suicide Charge Over Wife's Death
The Mahim police in Mumbai have formally registered a case against a man for abetment to suicide, following a detailed complaint lodged by his in-laws. The complaint alleges that sustained harassment and torture over several years ultimately drove his wife to take her own life.
Complaint Details Years of Alleged Abuse
A 40-year-old vegetable seller from Raigad filed the police report, claiming that her sister, Yashoda Pednekar, was subjected to relentless physical and mental harassment by her husband, Shrikant Vinayak Pednekar. According to the complainant, Manda Hari Mhatre, Yashoda, who was 35 years old, married Shrikant in 2013 and faced continuous abuse throughout their marriage.
The allegations include accusations of an extramarital affair and severe domestic violence, creating an environment of fear and distress for Yashoda. The complainant emphasized that this pattern of behavior persisted over many years, severely impacting Yashoda's mental well-being.
History of Escalating Tensions and Legal Interventions
The situation escalated in 2016 when Yashoda was allegedly assaulted and thrown out of her marital home. She then returned to her parental home in Raigad, and a formal court complaint was filed. A settlement was reached in 2017, but the peace was short-lived.
In 2023, Yashoda again reached out to her family, reporting ongoing fights and physical beatings by her husband and mother-in-law. She briefly stayed with her sister before being taken back to Mumbai by her husband, indicating a cycle of abuse and reconciliation that continued to torment her.
Tragic Suicide and Police Action
The tragedy unfolded on January 1, 2026, when the family was informed by the accused's mother that Yashoda had allegedly hanged herself at their Mahim residence. She was rushed to Sion Hospital, but it was too late. The suicide is believed to have occurred between the night of December 31, 2025, and the morning of January 1, 2026.
The complainant firmly asserts that this act was a direct result of the continuous harassment and torture inflicted by Shrikant Pednekar, leading to the police booking him for abetment to suicide. The case highlights the severe consequences of domestic abuse and the legal recourse available to victims' families seeking justice.
This incident underscores the critical need for awareness and intervention in cases of domestic violence, as prolonged harassment can have devastating outcomes. The Mahim police are now investigating the matter thoroughly to determine the full extent of the allegations and ensure appropriate legal action is taken.
