Mohali Hit-and-Run Leaves Young Woman Bedridden; Family Alleges Police Inaction
A devastating early-morning hit-and-run incident in Phase 5, Mohali, has left a 26-year-old woman with severe injuries, rendering her bedridden for months and casting a shadow over her future. The victim, Simranjit Kaur, who works in Industrial Area, Sector 74 (Phase 8-B), was returning home after her night shift when the tragedy struck around 4 am on January 10.
Details of the Accident and Injuries
Simranjit was riding her two-wheeler towards Palam Enclave, Kharar, when she paused briefly near a roadside food cart in front of Khaira Dhaba to eat. At that moment, a speeding car, reportedly coming from the Phase 3/5 traffic light, rammed into her vehicle. The impact flung her a distance, leaving her unconscious and causing catastrophic injuries.
Her left leg was fractured below the knee, her left arm suffered multiple fractures, and her hip was broken. Additionally, she sustained several internal injuries, compounding her plight.
Medical Treatment and Recovery Timeline
After initial treatment at Civil Hospital, Sector 56-A (Phase 6), Simranjit was referred to PGIMER Chandigarh, where she underwent multiple surgeries. Following this intensive medical care, she has returned to her native place, Jagadhri, where her family is now providing support. Doctors have advised complete bed rest, estimating that her recovery may take nearly a year, significantly disrupting her personal and professional life.
Victim's Account and Allegations of Police Inaction
Recalling the harrowing incident, Simranjit described the car as traveling at a very high speed. She stated, "There were two boys and a girl in the car besides the driver. Police were already chasing them, and they were fleeing after some wrongdoing. In panic, the driver lost control and hit my two-wheeler and the roadside cart. After the accident, they abandoned the car and fled."
Due to her critical condition and the need for continuous surgeries, Simranjit was unable to provide her statement promptly, resulting in a six-day delay in case registration. Her mother, Harjeet Kaur, has voiced strong allegations against the police, claiming that while her daughter suffers in pain and cannot walk, the accused driver and companions remain at large. "Police have registered sections, but no arrests have been made so far. We want strict action so that our daughter gets justice and such negligence is not repeated," she asserted.
Impact on Victim's Life and Investigation Status
The accident has shattered Simranjit's future; her wedding, scheduled for April, has been postponed, and her career has suffered a setback of at least a year. Despite the car being abandoned at the scene, no arrests have been made even after six days, fueling frustration and calls for accountability.
Meanwhile, Shyam Singh, the investigating officer, provided an update, stating that the investigation has identified the car owner, a resident of Faridkot. "A police team will soon question him and arrest the driver," he added, offering a glimmer of hope for justice in this distressing case.
