Minor Boy Crashes Mercedes into SUV Inside Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel, Three Injured

The DB Marg police in Mumbai have registered a case against the owner of a Mercedes car, his granddaughter, and her minor friend for rash and negligent driving following a serious accident inside a tunnel on the city's Coastal Road. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, resulted in injuries to three individuals, including one with grievous harm.

Details of the Coastal Road Tunnel Collision

According to police reports, the accident took place around 1:45 am inside a tunnel on Mumbai's Coastal Road. A speeding Mercedes, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old minor boy, was heading towards South Mumbai when it crashed into an EcoSport SUV from behind. The impact was so severe that it pushed the EcoSport into a Honda City car that was moving ahead in the same direction, creating a chain-reaction collision.

The EcoSport was being driven by Prasanna Mopkar, a 36-year-old resident of Mira Road, who was traveling with his wife and mother-in-law towards South Mumbai. Mopkar had left Mira Road around 12:30 am along with his wife and picked up his mother-in-law on the way from Borivali. The family was heading to Bademiya Hotel in Colaba for a late-night dinner when the crash occurred.

Injuries and Immediate Aftermath

Following the collision, Mopkar and his mother-in-law sustained minor injuries, while his wife suffered grievous injuries to her nose. She was immediately rushed to GT Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The police confirmed that all three victims received prompt medical attention, though the wife's condition required hospitalization due to the severity of her injuries.

Investigation Reveals Startling Details

During their investigation, the DB Marg police discovered that the Mercedes involved in the accident is registered in the name of a senior citizen businessman residing in Agripada. His 18-year-old granddaughter allegedly took the car's key from their home without permission and drove towards South Mumbai along with her 17-year-old friend.

Police officials stated that the granddaughter allowed her minor friend to drive the luxury vehicle, and it was this inexperienced driver who lost control of the car inside the tunnel, leading to the devastating crash. "The minor driver was unable to control the car due to high speed, resulting in the collision," explained a police officer involved in the case. "As per our preliminary investigation, he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident."

Legal Action and Charges Filed

The DB Marg police have booked the car's owner, his granddaughter, and her minor friend under multiple sections for rash and negligent driving, along with relevant provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act. This legal action highlights the serious consequences of allowing minors to operate vehicles without proper authorization or experience.

Authorities have emphasized that further investigation is currently underway to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident. The case serves as a stark reminder about the dangers of underage driving and the importance of responsible vehicle ownership in preventing such accidents on Mumbai's busy roadways.
