In a startling case of impersonation, a 34-year-old man was apprehended by police in Bihar's Madhepura district for posing as an officer from the vigilance department and illegally extorting money from commuters. The arrest, which took place on Monday, followed a tip-off about a individual falsely stopping vehicles.
The Arrest and Chase
Acting on secret information, a police team from the Madhepura sadar station, led by Station House Officer (SHO) Vimlendu Kumar, swiftly moved to the location. The team received details about a person illegally halting passing vehicles while pretending to be a vigilance department officer and intimidating people for money.
Upon the arrival of the police vehicle, a man wearing an army T-shirt, who was standing by the roadside, began to slowly attempt an escape. The alert police personnel chased and successfully caught the fleeing individual. The raiding team included SHO Vimlendu Kumar, sub-inspectors Nadeem Akhtar and Sachin Kumar, along with armed personnel from the police station.
Interrogation Reveals Elaborate Scam
During initial interrogation, the accused persistently evaded questions and continued to claim he was a genuine officer from the vigilance department. However, under strict questioning, he broke down and revealed his identity.
The accused was identified as Vijay Kumar Singh, aged 34. He is the son of Abhay Kumar Singh and a resident of Chandaur Hanuman Nagar Ward-10 under the Saur Bazar police station area in Saharsa. Currently, he was living as a tenant in Nathun Munshi's house in Bhirkhi Ward-22, Madhepura.
Madhepura ASP Pravendra Bharti stated that a fake police identity card was recovered from Singh during a search. The card had 'Special Duty Officer Police, Post SI Officer, State-Bihar' written on it, which was confirmed to be completely fabricated upon investigation. Local residents present at the spot corroborated that the individual frequently came to the area, stopped vehicles under the guise of being a police officer, and illegally extorted money.
The Rs 17 Lakh Fake Job Deal
The investigation took a more surprising turn when Vijay Kumar Singh disclosed the origins of his fake police identity. He claimed to have appeared for the Bihar Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination in 2022.
Singh revealed that outside the examination centre, he met an unidentified man who later approached him with a deal. This person visited Singh's home, discussed a plan, and took a staggering sum of Rs 17 lakh from him. In return, the man provided Singh with the fake police identity card and allegedly promised him a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 for working as a fake officer.
Following the arrest and interrogation, Vijay Kumar Singh was sent to judicial custody. The police are investigating the case further to uncover the network behind this scam and to identify the person who took the large sum of money from the accused.
