A 45-year-old man was left fighting for his life after a brutal stabbing attack by an allegedly drunk youth on the morning of New Year's Day in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district. The incident, which occurred near a liquor shop, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
Roadside Altercation Turns Violent
The attack took place at approximately 8:30 am on January 1 near an electricity substation on the Deoria-Kasya road. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Tarkulwa police station. According to police reports, the victim, Santosh Yadav, a resident of Dubey Tola village, was on his motorcycle heading towards Balpur Srinagar Chauraha for personal work.
The accused, identified as Amarjeet Gupta from Balpur village, was reportedly standing on the road in an inebriated state. Gupta attempted to stop Yadav's motorcycle. When Yadav tried to proceed, a heated argument broke out between the two men. In a sudden and violent escalation, the accused allegedly pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Yadav in the abdomen.
Critical Injuries and Emergency Referral
The attack was so severe that Yadav collapsed on the road, lying in a pool of blood. Bystanders who witnessed the assault quickly rushed to his aid. They initially took him to the local Community Health Centre for emergency treatment.
Due to the gravity of his wounds, he was soon referred to Maharshi Devaraha Baba Medical College in Deoria. After preliminary assessment, doctors determined his injuries were too critical for them to handle. Medical officials stated that his intestines were severely damaged in the stabbing. Consequently, he was urgently referred to the higher-level trauma facility at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur. His condition remains critical as of the latest reports.
Swift Police Action and Arrest
Law enforcement responded promptly to the incident. Tarkulwa Station House Officer (SHO) Bhupendra Singh confirmed that the accused, Amarjeet Gupta, was taken into custody shortly after the attack. SHO Singh stated, "The attacker was under the influence of alcohol. He has been arrested. Further legal action is being initiated."
The police have registered a case and are investigating the exact motive behind the sudden assault. The proximity of the incident to a country liquor shop has brought the issue of public intoxication and violence into sharp focus, especially on a day of celebration like New Year's.
