Man Arrested for Impersonating Crime Branch Officer in Lucknow Extortion Scam
In a startling case of impersonation and extortion, the Naka police in Lucknow arrested a man on Saturday for allegedly posing as a Crime Branch officer to intimidate and extort money from an unsuspecting individual. The incident highlights the audacious tactics used by criminals to exploit public fear of law enforcement.
Complaint Details and Initial Encounter
According to Inspector Abhinav Kumar Verma, the case unfolded after a complaint was lodged on March 24 by Rais, a resident of Hussainganj in Unnao district. Rais reported that he was visiting a shrine near the bustling Charbagh railway station when a brief interaction with a woman set the stage for the subsequent crime.
Shortly after the woman left, the accused, identified as Arjun Kumar from Mataria village in Unnao district, approached Rais. Kumar boldly claimed to be an officer from the Crime Branch and stopped Rais for questioning, leveraging his fake authority to create a sense of urgency and fear.
False Accusations and Extortion Demands
In a manipulative twist, Arjun Kumar falsely accused Rais of misbehaving with the woman who had spoken to him earlier. He threatened to send Rais to jail unless the matter was "settled" financially, demanding a hefty sum of Rs 50,000 to avoid legal consequences.
Frightened by the threat of imprisonment, Rais checked his pockets and wallet, from which the accused forcibly took Rs 2,500 before hastily fleeing the scene. This quick theft left the victim shaken and prompted him to seek justice.
Police Action and Arrest
Following the traumatic incident, Rais promptly approached the Naka police station to file a formal complaint. The police acted swiftly, registering a case and launching a thorough investigation into the allegations of impersonation and extortion.
Their efforts culminated in the arrest of Arjun Kumar on Saturday, bringing relief to the victim and underscoring the police's commitment to tackling such fraudulent activities. Further legal proceedings are now underway to ensure justice is served in this case.
Broader Implications and Public Awareness
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by individuals impersonating law enforcement officers to commit crimes. It underscores the importance of public vigilance and verifying the credentials of anyone claiming to be an officer, especially in isolated or crowded areas like railway stations.
Authorities urge citizens to report any suspicious behavior immediately to prevent similar scams and protect themselves from financial and emotional harm.
