Mysuru Child Helpline Witnesses Dramatic Surge in Complaint Volume

The District Child Helpline (1098) in Mysuru has experienced a staggering increase in reported cases, with data revealing that complaints more than doubled between April 2025 and February 2026 compared to the preceding two-year period. This alarming trend highlights growing concerns over child welfare issues in the region, with child marriages emerging as a predominant category among the grievances received by the toll-free facility.

Quantifying the Complaint Escalation

According to official statistics presented by Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi R Hebbalkar in response to a query from Mysuru-Mandya MLC Madhu G Madegowda, the helpline registered a total of 1,070 complaints during the April 2025 to February 2026 timeframe. This figure stands in stark contrast to the 453 complaints logged between September 2023 and March 2024, and the 439 cases recorded from April 2024 to March 2025. Notably, authorities confirmed that all reported cases across these periods were successfully resolved.

Child Marriage Emerges as Primary Concern

The data further delineates that child marriage-related complaints constitute a significant portion of the helpline's caseload. Specifically, 691 cases pertained to child marriages during the documented periods, with 277 complaints filed between April 2025 and March 2026 alone. The previous year, 2024-25, saw 279 similar complaints, underscoring the persistent nature of this issue.

Insights from Child Welfare Experts

Mahadeva Kote, a member of the quasi-judicial Child Welfare Committee (CWC), elaborated on the complaint spectrum, noting that while child marriage cases lead, they are closely followed by incidents under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. "Today we are receiving complaints related to behavioural issues too. Complaints from children of single parents, child labour were also received at the 1098," Kote stated, indicating a broadening range of concerns being addressed through the helpline.

Attributing Factors Behind the Surge

Former CWC member E Dhananjaya and KV Stanly, co-founder of Odanadi Seva Samsthe, attributed the dramatic rise in complaint numbers to heightened awareness about the child helpline among both children and the broader society. "Earlier, there was not much awareness about the 1098. But today it has become very popular everywhere. So, the children are lodging complaints related to the issues that matter to them," they observed. This increased visibility and trust in the system are seen as positive developments, enabling more children to seek help.

Mysuru's Standing in Statewide Context

Amidst this surge, Mysuru district has secured the third position in terms of complaints registered at the Child Helpline across the state over the past three years. This ranking reflects both the scale of issues being reported and the effectiveness of local awareness campaigns in encouraging utilization of the helpline services.

The escalation in complaints, while concerning, is interpreted by officials as a sign of growing confidence in the child protection mechanism, prompting calls for continued vigilance and enhanced support systems to address the root causes, particularly the prevalent issue of child marriages.
