Lucknow Court Imposes 20-Year Sentence for Minor Rape Under Special Drive

A court in Lucknow has delivered a stern verdict, sentencing a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl. The conviction was achieved as part of 'Operation Conviction', a special initiative launched by the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) to expedite justice in such grave cases.

The punishment was pronounced on Tuesday by Additional District Judge, Special POCSO Act-I, Lucknow, Ashutosh Kumar Singh. The convict, identified as Karuna Shankar, a resident originally from Hardoi and currently living in Dubagga, Lucknow, was found guilty in a case that dates back to September 2021. The case was registered at the Kakori police station based on a complaint filed by the survivor's mother.

The mother alleged that her minor daughter was sexually assaulted and threatened with death, leading to the swift legal action under stringent laws.

Legal Charges and Additional Sentences

The court convicted Karuna Shankar under Section 376AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to aggravated penetrative sexual assault, and under Sections 5/6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. These provisions are designed to ensure severe penalties for crimes against children.

In addition to the primary sentence, the convict received further penalties. He was handed one-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 each under IPC Sections 323 for voluntarily causing hurt and 506 for criminal intimidation. According to DCP (West) Kamlesh Dixit, all sentences will run concurrently, meaning the total imprisonment period remains 20 years.
