Lucknow Kite String Injuries: Third Case in Three Days

Lucknow Grapples with Kite String Peril as Third Injury Reported

In a distressing recurrence of urban hazard, the state capital of Lucknow witnessed another severe injury caused by a kite string on Thursday evening. The victim, a contractual worker named Sudhir Kumar, was on his way to work in the Gomtinagar Extension area when the incident occurred.

Severe Injuries from Banned Chinese Manjha

Sudhir Kumar was riding his motorcycle when a sharp Chinese manjha, a type of kite string, became entangled around his face and neck. The immediate and forceful impact caused serious lacerations. Alert passers-by quickly intervened, helping to remove the dangerous thread and rushing Kumar to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Medical professionals at the hospital reported that Kumar arrived with a deep cut on his neck. After administering first aid and bandaging the wound, he was discharged. Doctors emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the injury could have been fatal if the cut had penetrated deeper into vital areas.

A Pattern of Dangerous Incidents

This alarming event represents the third reported case of kite string injury in Lucknow within just three days, highlighting a persistent public safety crisis.

  • February 5: A retired soldier sustained significant cuts to his cheek and lip after being struck by a kite string on Shaheed Path. His injuries required approximately 30 stitches.
  • February 4: In a tragic incident in the Old City, a man, who was the father of two daughters, lost his life after a kite string slit his throat while he was commuting to work.

Community Frustration and Calls for Action

Local residents express growing frustration and fear over the continued use of banned Chinese manjha, which remains openly sold despite official prohibitions. Akash Kumar, a resident, pointed out that kite flying is frequent from vacant lands in the area, turning roads into danger zones for motorcyclists and pedestrians alike.

He further revealed that injuries from manjha have become alarmingly common, with an estimated two to three commuters getting hurt almost daily. The community is now vocally demanding regular enforcement drives and stringent legal action against both sellers of the hazardous string and individuals who fly kites irresponsibly in populated areas.

The series of incidents underscores an urgent need for enhanced regulatory measures and public awareness to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of Lucknow's citizens.
