Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has thrown his weight behind Punjab Kings openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow, expressing confidence that the duo will rediscover their form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Ashwin, who is leading the Rajasthan Royals in the tournament, acknowledged that the Kings' opening pair has faced recent hiccups but backed them to come good soon.
Ashwin's Support for Punjab Openers
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the clash between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, Ashwin said, "Prabhsimran and Bairstow are quality players. They have had a few failures, but that happens in T20 cricket. I am sure they will bounce back strongly. They have the ability to take the game away from the opposition."
Prabhsimran and Bairstow's Recent Form
Prabhsimran Singh, the young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, has managed only 89 runs in six innings this season, with a highest score of 35. Jonny Bairstow, the explosive England opener, has scored 112 runs in six matches, including a half-century. Their inconsistent form has been a concern for Punjab Kings, who are currently placed fifth in the points table with four wins from nine games.
Despite the struggles, Ashwin believes the duo possesses the firepower to turn things around. "They are both aggressive players who can change the complexion of the game in a few overs. It is just a matter of time before they click," he added.
Punjab Kings' Batting Concerns
Punjab Kings have relied heavily on their middle order, with Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran contributing significantly. However, the lack of solid starts has put pressure on the middle order. Captain Shikhar Dhawan has also been inconsistent, scoring 215 runs in nine innings at an average of 26.87.
Ashwin, who has played for Punjab Kings in the past, understands the dynamics of the team. "I know the set-up well. They have a strong squad, but they need their openers to fire. Once Prabhsimran and Bairstow get going, they can be unstoppable," he remarked.
Rajasthan Royals' Preparation
Rajasthan Royals, led by Ashwin, are currently third in the standings with six wins in nine matches. Ashwin has been in excellent form, taking 12 wickets at an economy rate of 7.8. He stressed the importance of staying focused against Punjab Kings, who have a dangerous batting lineup.
"We have to be at our best against Punjab. They have match-winners like Livingstone, Curran, and Dhawan. If their openers also come good, they become even more dangerous. We have prepared well and are confident of executing our plans," Ashwin said.
The match between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings is scheduled to be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on May 8, 2026.
