A legal professional from Mumbai has formally approached the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC), pressing it to independently take notice of a devastating accident involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus. The move aims to secure a fair and unbiased investigation into the incident that claimed multiple lives.
The Tragic Incident in Bhandup
The urgent plea follows a horrific accident that occurred on Monday night in the suburban area of Bhandup. A BEST bus, while reversing, crashed into a group of pedestrians, resulting in a tragic loss of life and injuries. Official reports confirm that four individuals were killed and nine others sustained injuries in this unfortunate event.
Allegations of Systemic Negligence
In the application submitted through advocate Ashish Rai, the lawyer highlighted a disturbing pattern of alleged negligence within the public transport utility. The plea referenced a previous catastrophic accident near Kurla West railway station last year, which led to eight fatalities and injuries to 49 people.
"After every accident, no action is taken against those responsible. As a result, such incidents continue to occur. There is a possibility that the matter may be hushed up after such an inhumane accident," the application stated, expressing deep concern over accountability.
Demands for Action and Preventive Measures
The lawyer has urged the MSHRC to exercise its suo motu powers to ensure a transparent inquiry. Key demands outlined in the plea include:
- Seeking complete information on the investigation from the police, Mumbai Police Commissioner, senior BEST officials, and the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.
- Taking "direct serious action" if any corrupt government or administrative officials are found involved.
- Directing BEST to immediately launch a comprehensive staff training program.
- Calling for audit reports for both operational and non-operational buses in the BEST fleet as a preventative step.
The commission has acknowledged receipt of the application. Meanwhile, CCTV footage from the accident site has captured the terrifying moment when the bus suddenly moved backward, causing pedestrians to scramble desperately to safety.
