Kolkata Police Officer Attacked During Duty, Triggers Body Camera Directive

A Kolkata Police officer was allegedly assaulted while performing his duties in the Behala area early Sunday morning. This incident has prompted Lalbazar, the headquarters of Kolkata Police, to issue a fresh directive mandating the use of body-worn cameras during all enforcement operations to enhance transparency and support investigative processes.

Details of the Assault Incident

The assault occurred around 1 am on Roy Bahadur Road near Mahabirtala. Police officials reported that a team from Behala Police Station responded to complaints about a disturbance involving an allegedly intoxicated individual who was creating a ruckus. When the officers intervened to manage the situation, the accused reportedly hurled abuses at an assistant sub-inspector before physically attacking him in an attempt to obstruct the officer from carrying out his official responsibilities.

The injured officer was promptly taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where he received medical treatment and was later discharged. An FIR has been registered against the accused, and a thorough investigation is currently underway. Authorities are actively working to collect witness statements and any available digital evidence to build a strong case.

New Directive for Body-Worn Cameras

Following this incident, which is part of a series of recent confrontations between citizens and police personnel, Kolkata Police has reiterated the critical need for strict adherence to operational protocols. In a directive issued on Monday, all officers have been instructed to activate body-worn cameras during their field duties. The footage must be preserved for a minimum of six months to ensure accountability, transparency, and to assist in future investigations.

This move aims to prevent similar incidents and provide clear evidence in cases of disputes or allegations. The use of body cameras is expected to enhance public trust and improve the overall effectiveness of law enforcement operations in Kolkata.
