In a massive security operation for the New Year celebrations, Kolkata Police is deploying a force of over 4,500 personnel across the city. The heightened vigil, focusing on curbing accidents from drink-driving and speeding, will be in effect from December 30 and remain stringent through New Year's Eve (December 31) and New Year's Day (January 1).
Party Zones and Crowded Hotspots Under Scanner
The police strategy specifically targets the city's famous party zones and areas witnessing massive post-Christmas crowds. Key locations under the security blanket include Park Street and Kasba, along with popular attractions like Alipore Zoo, Victoria Memorial Hall, Indian Museum, Millennium Park, Science City, and various clubs.
Authorities will establish multiple check posts around these hotspots. The primary focus will be on monitoring security and identifying rogue motorists and bikers who violate traffic rules.
Multi-Layered Security and Traffic Management
The police plan involves a multi-pronged approach to ensure public safety. Special arrangements will be made on roads and in sensitive areas that experience high footfall of visitors at night.
In addition to uniformed personnel, special teams of cops in plainclothes will be on patrol to keep a discreet watch. Specialized units like the watch section of the detective department, the all-women Winners team, and the quick response team (QRT) will be pressed into service, particularly in the bustling Park Street area.
Pedestrian Safety and Traffic Flow Measures
To manage the surge in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, police have devised specific measures. They will create special channels for pedestrian safety to prevent accidents. Furthermore, traffic signal timings will be adjusted at key intersections to provide adequate time for people to cross roads safely.
Physical barricades will also be put up on roads near the identified hotspots to regulate vehicle movement and enhance crowd control. The party zones on the EM Bypass connector, especially Kasba, will also be under strict police surveillance as per the detailed plans.
This comprehensive security blueprint underscores the Kolkata Police's commitment to ensuring that the city's residents and visitors can usher in the New Year safely and without incident.
