Kolhapur Property Dispute Escalates into Brutal Double Murder

In a tragic incident stemming from a bitter family feud over ancestral property, a man and his son allegedly murdered the man's elderly father and younger brother in Hingangaon village, Hatkanangle tehsil, Kolhapur district. The horrific event unfolded on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Victims and Accused Identified in the Gruesome Attack

The deceased have been identified as Maruti Bandu Kundale, aged 72, and his son Shital, aged 40. The accused are Sambhaji Kundale, aged 47 (son of Maruti and brother of Shital), and his 20-year-old son Vivek. According to police reports, the primary motive behind the brutal attack was a long-standing dispute over the fair distribution of ancestral land.

Root Cause: Dispute Over Ancestral Land Allocation

Police investigations reveal that Sambhaji was deeply aggrieved because he believed he was not receiving a fair share of the family's ancestral property. The situation worsened when Maruti reportedly gave an additional acre of land to Shital, which Sambhaji perceived as unjust favoritism. This act intensified the existing tensions and fueled the conflict.

Police Account of the Incident and Failed Mediation Efforts

Sharad Memane, the Police Inspector of Hatkanangle police station, provided detailed insights into the case. "There used to be frequent fights between the two brothers over property sharing," Memane stated. "Several people tried to mediate and find a way out. After mediation efforts borne no results, the family had become isolated."

In this volatile atmosphere, Sambhaji and Vivek allegedly launched a violent attack on Maruti and Shital. The assailants used a spade and a hoe—common farming tools—as weapons during the assault. Both Maruti and Shital succumbed to their injuries and died on the spot at the scene of the crime.

Aftermath: Surrender, Hospitalization, and Legal Proceedings

Following the double murder, Sambhaji took the step of surrendering himself before the police and confessing to the crime. His son Vivek is currently admitted to a hospital for undisclosed reasons. Inspector Memane confirmed, "We will soon arrest him as well."

Sambhaji was presented before the local court in Vadgaon, where he has been remanded in police custody until April 4. The police are continuing their investigation to gather further evidence and understand the full sequence of events leading to this family tragedy.

Broader Implications and Community Impact

This incident highlights the devastating consequences that unresolved property disputes can have within families, especially in rural areas where land ownership is closely tied to livelihood and social status. The use of everyday farming tools in the attack adds a layer of grim reality to the violence, underscoring how domestic conflicts can escalate into lethal confrontations.

The local community in Hingangaon village is reeling from the shock, as such incidents are rare and deeply unsettling. Authorities are urging families to seek legal and mediation channels to resolve property disputes amicably, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
