In a significant development, the Lucknow Police on Friday arrested a junior resident doctor from King George's Medical University (KGMU) who was wanted in a case involving allegations of forcible religious conversion and physical abuse. The arrest came after the accused, identified as Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak, returned to his rented accommodation in the city.
Arrest During Attempt to Collect Belongings
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that their investigative team received specific intelligence on January 9, 2026. The information revealed that Dr. Nayak had come to his rented house in Lucknow to collect his personal belongings and was reportedly planning to surrender before a court. Acting swiftly on this tip, the police team apprehended him from the location. Following his arrest, he was sent to judicial custody.
Details of the Serious Allegations
The case originated from a complaint filed by a medical student of KGMU on December 23, 2025. The student alleged that Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak had physically abused her. Furthermore, when discussions of marriage arose, she was allegedly forced into religious conversion. As the investigation progressed, a similar and even more grave complaint surfaced from another medical student. This second complaint accused Nayak of abuse, forceful abortion, and religious conversion for the purpose of marriage.
The probe also implicated the doctor's parents. DCP Srivastava explained that the names of Nayak's parents emerged during the investigation for their alleged involvement in the incidents. Consequently, on January 5, 2026, his parents were arrested on charges of forcible religious conversion. The police confirmed that these arrests were made after the statements of both victims were formally recorded before a magistrate, where they detailed the parents' alleged role in pressuring them to convert and in causing a miscarriage.
Manhunt Ends with Capture
While his parents were in custody, Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak, a resident of Pilibhit, had been evading arrest. The Lucknow Police had declared him an absconder and announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his capture. His arrest on January 9 brings the active manhunt to a close, though the legal proceedings are set to continue. The case has drawn considerable attention, highlighting serious allegations within a premier medical institution.
