In a significant move to decongest roads and enhance regional connectivity, the Maharashtra government is spearheading the development of an extensive water transport network. This ambitious project, spanning nearly 200 nautical miles, aims to link distant suburbs within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with key hubs like the newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport and the central business district of Nariman Point.
A Multi-Modal Transport Vision for MMR
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed these plans at an event on Wednesday, highlighting a comprehensive strategy to address the region's growing transport demands. Once operational, this waterway network is projected to serve a staggering 1.6 crore (16 million) passengers annually, offering a viable alternative to the overburdened road system. Fadnavis emphasized that Thane city and district, alongside Raigad, are transforming into major investment magnets, necessitating robust infrastructure upgrades.
To tackle the persistent issue of traffic congestion in Thane, the government is pushing forward with an expansive Metro network. By 2030, approximately 475 kilometres of Metro corridors are slated to be operational, forming a crucial loop around Mumbai and establishing seamless links with Thane. Furthermore, public transport across the entire MMR, including Thane, will be strengthened and integrated under a unified operational platform for better efficiency and user experience.
Road, Rail, and Civic Infrastructure Boost
The Chief Minister assured that future transport needs have been anticipated, with several projects already in the pipeline. He cited examples such as the Aamne–Kasheli–Bhayander road and a proposed elevated corridor that will directly connect Thane with the Navi Mumbai airport. On the railways front, Fadnavis reiterated plans to upgrade the suburban system by introducing air-conditioned coaches without increasing fares for commuters.
Referring to the high-speed bullet train project on Thane's outskirts, he mentioned that a dedicated technology hub is proposed around the station area, promising economic spin-offs. Addressing critical civic issues, the CM stated that waste processing initiatives are gaining momentum, with cities like Thane and Mumbai expected to eventually eliminate the need for dump yards. To combat water scarcity in urban centres, the construction of the Poshir and Shilar reservoirs has been prioritized.
