Jorhat's Road Safety Drive for Picnic Season: Key Advisories Issued
Jorhat's Road Safety Drive for Picnic Season

As the year-end picnic season hits its peak, the Jorhat district administration in Assam has rolled out a comprehensive road safety initiative. This campaign aims to ensure that celebrations across the district's scenic spots do not turn tragic due to road accidents.

Multi-Departmental Drive at Popular Picnic Spots

In a coordinated effort, teams from the district administration, police, and transport department have begun visiting popular picnic destinations. Over the past week, these joint teams have covered areas from the banks of the Brahmaputra river to remote forest edges and rural locations where holidaymakers gather.

Their mission is direct engagement with the public. Officials are distributing safety pamphlets and erecting banners with clear, vital messages. The key advisories being emphasized include:

  • Don't drink and drive
  • Don't overload vehicles
  • Avoid overspeeding
  • Don't carry passengers on goods vehicles

A Sustained Effort for Safe Celebrations

Jorhat Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Subhrajyoti Borah clarified that this is not a one-off exercise. "We have observed that excitement during the picnic season sometimes leads to negligence on the roads. This campaign is meant to remind people that celebrations should not come at the cost of safety," the SSP stated. He confirmed that the drive will continue till the end of January.

An official from the district transport department provided specific timing advice, urging picnic-goers to leave their locations by 4 PM. This is to mitigate the heightened risk of accidents that occur after dusk. The advisory also stresses the importance of using headlights and reflectors during the foggy mornings and evenings typical of this season.

Appeal for Cooperation and Ongoing Monitoring

District Commissioner Jay Shivani appealed to both residents and visitors to cooperate with the authorities. "We want everyone to celebrate responsibly. Our goal is not to restrict joy but to ensure that every outing ends happily and safely," the DC said.

As part of the sustained awareness drive, teams are making unannounced visits to monitor compliance. They are providing on-the-spot guidance, especially to groups traveling long distances or carrying large loads of food and equipment. Roadside banners have been installed along key routes leading to picnic spots, bearing the reminder: "Drive Safe, Reach Home Safe."

Adding teeth to the awareness campaign, the district transport department has announced that regular checks on vehicles and drivers are being conducted to ensure strict adherence to all safety norms.
