A tragic accident occurred on Sunday when a nine-year-old girl was struck and killed by a speeding SUV on the Govindpur-Sahibganj main road in Jamtara district. The incident sparked widespread protests, leading to a three-hour road blockade by angry villagers.
Details of the Accident
The deceased has been identified as Sajda Khatun, a resident of Koridih Van village. According to locals, Sajda was returning home after bathing in a pond when a white SUV hit her, throwing her several feet away. The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
Emergency Response and Death
Family members and villagers rushed the critically injured girl to Narayanpur community health centre. After providing primary treatment, doctors referred her to a hospital in Dhanbad. However, she succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Protests and Road Blockade
As news of Sajda's death spread, angry villagers blocked the road around 11 am, disrupting traffic for nearly three hours. Vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road as protesters demanded the arrest of the accused driver and compensation for the victim’s family.
Police Intervention
Narayanpur police station officer in-charge Murad Hasan arrived at the scene with police personnel and persuaded protesters to lift the blockade after assuring legal action and government compensation. “Efforts are underway to identify the absconding driver by scanning CCTV footage from the area. A case will be registered against the unidentified driver,” the officer stated.
The incident highlights the need for stricter traffic enforcement and road safety measures in the region. Authorities are continuing their investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice.
