The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday converted a petition concerning delays in Nagpur University examination results into a public interest litigation (PIL). The court emphasized that students' academic concerns cannot be sidelined.
Court's Observations
Hearing a plea filed by Neeraj Dharashivkar, a division bench comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Raj Wakode noted that the issue warranted broader public consideration. The court made it clear that "instead of questioning the credibility of the petition, it is more necessary to seriously examine the problems relating to students' results." The court directed the university to file a comprehensive affidavit by May 7.
Petitioner's Allegations
When it was filed last month through counsel Bhushan Mohta, the petition highlighted that more than 600 examinations conducted before Diwali 2025 remain affected by delays, with nearly 70% of results yet to be declared. The petitioner argued that the backlog is disrupting admissions for subsequent academic sessions, issuance of degree certificates, and placement opportunities for students.
University's Response
The university, however, informed the court that only 7% of results were pending after it fast-tracked the evaluation process following a hue and cry over pendency. It also stated that the schedule for 60 examinations under the summer session was already announced.
Bench Expresses Dissatisfaction
The bench expressed dissatisfaction over incomplete declaration of winter session results, indicating the situation required immediate action. The court earlier issued notices to the principal secretary of the higher and technical education department, the Nagpur University Vice-Chancellor, the registrar, the director of examinations and evaluation, and the outsourced agency involved, seeking detailed responses.
