Indian Tourist Succumbs After Florida Keys Reef Rescue
A tragic incident unfolded in the Florida Keys earlier this month, resulting in the death of an Indian tourist. Abhinav Lamba, aged 45, was swimming on Molasses Reef around 11 am on March 18 when he appeared to be in distress and went subsurface, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Rescue Efforts and Fatal Outcome
The crew of a commercial dive boat spotted Lamba and located him in approximately 25 feet of water. They brought him to a commercial dive vessel and immediately began CPR. He was then transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he was pronounced dead. Autopsy reports were pending at the time of the local report, and detectives did not suspect any foul play.
Molasses Reef: A Popular but Protected Diving Site
Molasses Reef is situated within a federal marine sanctuary off Key Largo. As a protected area, fishing is prohibited, and it is renowned for its abundant sea life, making it a favored destination for scuba diving and snorkeling, as reported by the Miami Herald.
Second Diving-Related Death in a Week
This incident marks the second diving-related fatality in the Florida Keys within a week. On March 13, a 71-year-old man from Missouri, identified as Lonnie Lee Higgins, died after a dive on the shipwreck Eagle off the coast of Islamorada. Higgins was found on the ocean floor at a depth of approximately 110 feet by divers.
No further details were provided by the sheriff's office regarding whether Abhinav Lamba was alone or accompanied by family members at the time of the incident. The community and authorities are likely reviewing safety protocols in light of these consecutive tragedies.
