Hyderabad: 2,731 drunk driving cases on New Year's Eve

In a major enforcement crackdown during the New Year's Eve celebrations, Hyderabad police registered a staggering 2,731 cases of drunk driving across the city. The intensive checks, which lasted until 6 am on Thursday, targeted revelers violating traffic laws.

Commissionerate-Wise Breakdown of Cases

The Hyderabad Police Commissionerate was the most active, booking 1,198 cases after setting up checks at 120 locations. The data reveals that the majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, with 1,042 cases registered against them. Three-wheeler drivers accounted for 51 cases, while four-wheeler and other vehicle drivers made up 105 cases.

Within this zone, the Malakpet area recorded the highest number of violations at 125, while Falaknuma saw the lowest count of just nine cases.

Rachakonda and Cyberabad Commissionerates Follow Suit

The erstwhile Rachakonda commissionerate was not far behind, registering 605 cases of drunk driving. Here, 511 two-wheeler riders, 80 four-wheeler drivers, and 14 three-wheeler drivers were booked. The Uppal traffic police zone recorded 126 cases, and LB Nagar logged 123. Jawaharnagar registered the lowest tally in this region with nine cases.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad police commissionerate booked 928 drink-driving cases. The breakdown included 695 two-wheeler riders, 199 four-wheeler drivers, 31 three-wheeler drivers, and three heavy vehicle drivers. Miyapur traffic police led the enforcement here with 102 cases, while RC Puram registered only seven.

Legal Consequences for the Accused

All individuals caught in this drive will face strict legal action. They will be produced in court, and their driving licences will be seized immediately. The licences will then be sent to the relevant Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) for suspension, as mandated under Section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

This massive enforcement action underscores the police's zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving, especially during festive periods when such violations typically see a sharp rise. The drive aimed to ensure public safety and prevent accidents on the roads.
