Discovery of the Body and Initial Investigation
On March 22, an unidentified male body was discovered near a powerhouse in the Civil Lines area of Gurgaon. The body exhibited injury marks on the face, with preliminary assessments suggesting death resulted from a fall and asphyxia. Typically, such cases might be processed quickly, but Sub-Inspector Omprakash chose a different path.
SI Omprakash noticed a small but significant detail: a tattoo in English on the man's chest that read "Nisha." This observation became the cornerstone of the investigation. Despite standard protocols requiring autopsies within 72 hours for unidentified bodies, Omprakash requested additional time to pursue leads, driven by a commitment to ensure the man did not remain nameless.

The investigation faced immediate hurdles, as no identity documents were found on the body. "Prima facie, it appeared he may have fallen while under the influence of alcohol," Omprakash stated. However, rather than accepting this as the final conclusion, he mobilized his team to explore all possible avenues. "I felt that we should make every possible effort to identify him so that his family can be informed. A person should not remain unidentified," he emphasized.
Noting the man's facial features, which suggested he might be from Northeast India, Omprakash proactively reached out to community groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from the region. "We connected with several organisations and circulated his photographs. His facial features indicated he could belong to the Northeast, so we focused our efforts there," he explained. This targeted approach proved instrumental in breaking the case.
Breakthrough and Identification
After persistent efforts, a breakthrough occurred when a woman came forward, reporting that her brother had been missing. She provided details that aligned with the investigation: her brother worked as a caterer, often stayed away from home for work, and had a tattoo. This led to the identification of the deceased as 38-year-old Umesh Khati, a native of Assam who was residing in Patel Nagar with his sister and brother-in-law.
Police coordination with Assam Bhawan in Delhi helped verify the information, confirming that "Nisha" was the name of Khati's divorced wife. Authorities concluded that Khati was found dead in an inebriated state, likely having fallen face-first, which caused the fatal injuries. On a recent Friday, with assistance from an NGO, Khati's body was transported back to his family in Assam, allowing them to perform last rites and find closure.
