Gurgaon Man, Son Allege Assault by Society Manager Over Dues

A 65-year-old man and his son in Gurgaon have alleged that they were abused and assaulted by a maintenance manager and bouncers at a residential society in Sohna last month following a dispute over pending dues. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Friday after an initial probe, while the developer denied any physical attack.

Incident Details

The complainant, Ashok Kumar Chaudhary, a resident of Signature Global Park 4 in Sector 36, stated that the incident occurred on April 2 after electricity to his flat was disconnected over unpaid common area maintenance (CAM) charges. According to his complaint, Chaudhary and his son visited the society's maintenance office around 11 am, citing extreme heat and requesting restoration of power. There, they met estate manager Hemant Gupta, who allegedly informed them that electricity would only be restored after all dues were cleared.

Chaudhary claimed he requested that the power be resumed first and assured payment later, but the situation escalated. “As we were leaving, he blocked our way, abused us, assaulted us and grabbed me by the throat,” he alleged, adding that Gupta also issued threats. He further alleged that when his son attempted to record the incident, the manager snatched his phone and called in bouncers. The bouncers allegedly assaulted his son, detained him at the office, and forced him to delete the video before returning the phone later that evening.

Legal Action

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Gupta and others. An investigation is ongoing.

Developer's Response

Meanwhile, Signature Global denied the allegations, stating that no physical assault took place. The company said the estate manager is employed by Godrej Facilities Management and handles day-to-day operations through the facility management agency. In its statement, the developer noted that CAM charges had been introduced after multiple notices over several months, but some residents had opposed the payments. It alleged that an unscheduled gathering at the estate office on the day of the incident turned tense, with some residents engaging in inappropriate behavior, including misconduct with a female staff member. The company said a separate complaint had been filed in this regard and maintained that none of its representatives witnessed any assault. It described the allegations as baseless and linked them to resistance from a small group of residents over CAM charges.
