Kere Habba Festival Highlights Lake and Canal Heritage
The 'Kere Habba' festival, held at Kukkarahalli Lake in Mysuru, celebrated the lake's rich biodiversity and the historical significance of the Purnaiah canal system. Environmentalists organized the event as part of a broader initiative to urge the government to revive the remaining parts of the Purnaiah Lake system and ensure the conservation of Kukkarahalli Lake.
Revival and Conservation Efforts Urged
The festival featured various activities including birdwatching walks, nature talks, and cultural performances, all aimed at raising awareness about the ecological importance of the lake. According to environmentalists, the Purnaiah canal system, built during the reign of Tipu Sultan, is a vital water supply network that has fallen into disrepair. They emphasized that restoring these canals would not only benefit Kukkarahalli Lake but also improve groundwater levels and support local agriculture.
Community and Government Engagement
Local residents, students, and officials participated in the event, which included a cleanliness drive and a pledge to protect the lake. The festival also showcased traditional crafts and local cuisine, drawing attention to the cultural heritage linked to the water bodies.
Environmental activist R. Gopi stated, "Kukkarahalli Lake is a lifeline for Mysuru's ecology. We need immediate government action to revive the Purnaiah canals and prevent further degradation of the lake." The initiative has garnered support from several NGOs and citizen groups.
Broader Impact on Mysuru's Water Systems
Kukkarahalli Lake spans approximately 62 hectares and supports diverse flora and fauna, including migratory birds. The Purnaiah canal system once connected several lakes in the region, but many stretches are now encroached upon or silted. Reviving these canals could help recharge groundwater and mitigate flooding in urban areas.
The festival concluded with a call for a comprehensive restoration plan, including desilting, removal of invasive species, and strict enforcement of encroachment laws. Environmentalists plan to submit a detailed proposal to the Mysuru district administration.
